If you are planning on doing any digging around your home or business, state law requires that you contact the Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service at 800-382-5544 at least two working days before you dig.

Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service (IUPPS), is a free, non-profit, statewide utility notification service that provides a communication link between IUPPS members and contractors, homeowners, or anyone else engaged in excavating activities.

This service is in place to help you avoid serious injury and avoid financial liabilities associated with damaged underground utility lines.

If you plan to dig within two feet of a marked utility line, state law requires that you expose the utility line only by the use of hand excavation, air-cutting, or vacuum excavation.

Indiana state law (IC8-1-26) requires that anyone engaged in excavating using mechanized equipment must call at least 2 full working days prior to the start of their project. IUPPS offers a one-point contact to reach member utilities to notify them of your proposed excavation.

When you call, be ready to provide the following information:

  1. The county that excavation will take place
  2. The township that the excavation will take place
  3. The address of the excavation site
  4. The nearest cross street
  5. A second cross street
  6. What city or town the excavation site is in or near
  7. Where on the property the excavation will take place

IUPPS also offers on-line services. You can find their Web site at http://www.iupps.org.
